The hills of Hanthana conceal within them an abundance of animal life. Don’t forget to keep your eyes out for troops of monkeys or even prickles of porcupine. Sri Lanka is also home to a rich and diverse range of birds, boasting over 400 species of which 33 are endemic. Many of these species can be found right here in the Hanthana region so you are truly spoilt for choice.
A variety of animal species have made the Hanthana Mountain Range their home, including the fishing cats, civets, wild boars, hares, a wide range of monkeys, foxes, hedgehogs and the elusive leopards.
Sri Lankan Fishing Cat
The fishing cat, a medium-sized cat, was globally classified as an endangered species by the IUCN in 2008. This cat can be identified by its olive green grey coat, which has dark spots in horizontal streaks running across the length of its body. It's typically found in swamps and marshy areas, oxbow lakes, reed beds, tidal creeks and mangrove areas.
